Name: Alexander 'Zan' Babylon
Species: Catkine
Age: 20
Sexuality: Gay, most of the time.
Appearance: Almost as leonine as his father. 6'2", large-boned and elegantly muscular, he's a pretty big cat - and a pretty, big cat, and he knows it too. His fur is deep golden ginger, and is hair is naturally the same except now it's a bright lapis blue mohawk - the floppy kind that trails down to his shoulders at the back and falls into his bright gold eyes at the front. He has a ring in his left eyebrow, three piercings in his left ear and four in his right, both nipples pierced and a belly stud. He also has the zodiac Leo symbol tattooed behind his right ear (meant to be a family symbol, he hates it and regards it as an ownership mark) and a trail of paw prints leading from the base of his tail, over his left hip and down to his inner thigh.
For his act, he wears a lot of bright gold jewellery with low-slung, richly-coloured but plain slacks and a brightly-embroidered sash belt with a gold and lapis bell buckle. All his performing clothes are fireproofed. Normally, he wears nearly the same amount of gold and the same dark, rich colours (blood red, indigo, that kind of thing) but not nearly so much embroidery, and also often with a belt that will allow him to carry at least one knife and a set of combat poi on his person.
Zan smiles a lot, but if he's upset his moods show vividly on his face. He's an extremely expressive person.
Skills: Zan is a fire dancer - he can use firestaffs, poi, juggle clubs and fireballs, and he's a fire-eater as well. By extension, he can also fight well with chains or combat poi, or with a staff or knife. He's also strong enough and agile enough that his lack of skill with hand-to-hand combat doesn't often matter.
We have heard from a number of sources that Zan is extremely good in bed. One of these sources is Zan himself, but apparently he isn't lying this time.
Failings: Zan is not good at hand-to-hand combat, if he's unarmed he has to go on the defensive immediately - luckily he's strong and agile enough to do that quite well. He's also never got out of his 'rebellious teenager' phase - that might have something to do with his father's obvious dislike of his boyfriend, but it's still making family gatherings awkward.
Anything else you can think of: Oldest child of Leo Babylon and Morag Evlantine, Zan has been part of Cirque du Desir all his life. He started learning to juggle when he was four - he was part of the clowns' act for several years - and when he was eight was started on firedancing. At twelve he entered the ring for the first time as a fire-eater and almost killed himself. It was an important lesson and when he tried again six weeks later, just three days shy of his thirteenth birthday, he made no slips - or at least, no dangerous ones.
When he was fifteen, puberty made its biggest mark and he came on heat for the first time. Unfortunately he was outside in the cirque at the time - most young catkine would have had a seer or a doctor predict the rising heat and he should have been safe at home with someone he knew and trusted, but Zan had been going through an uncommunicative phase at that time. And so he was found wandering, confused, desperately aroused and unsure what to do about it, by Redd Telheanias, one of the circus performers, and one who had known him since he was born. In this Zan was incredibly lucky - he was incredibly vulnerable and would have responded to the touch of practically anyone at that time - and Redd took Zan (who would have pounced him in public had he been certain of what he was supposed to do) back to his tent where they spent the next three days dealing with the heat and teaching the adolescent catkine about sex.
When he was eighteen he met Julian Laney, and his protective instincts took over. Julian, who up till then had not allowed anyone but his older sister near him, apparently decided that Zan was trustworthy too, and before long the two of them were a couple - a tentative one, for Julian hated to be touched by anyone and most of the time that included Zan too - but a couple nonetheless. They sleep in the same bed, and Zan is the only recipient of Julian's heat (you don't see either of them for days, but you hear them quite a lot...) but when Zan comes on heat, Julian lets him go to Redd, who is a trusted friend and asks for no emotional attachment in return.
Leo Babylon distrusts Julian, and that only made Zan want him more. Morag Babylon, on the other hand, takes Zan's side in this instance, which is why Zan tends to go to his mother for guidance.
He regards his siblings, most of them anyway, with a sort of benevolent fondness. The exceptions are Kier, now 13, who in Zan's opinion is growing up to be a brat and a mother's boy; Sally, who at seven is already a manipulative little bitch; and the 18-year-old twins Gina and Ella, who can be creepy at times in an identical-twin sort of way but can generally be relied on when Zan needs family allies or just mischief-backup.
Zan is very protective of Julian, almost to a fault, and he loves him dearly, although the jumpiness and the fear of touching can get very frustrating. He has a very egotistical streak - he takes after his father that way, although he'd hate to hear that said - and he knows he's sexy. He's also fiercely independant, knows what he likes and hates to be contradicted. His gentle side mostly gets used up on Julian and sometimes his mother - Gina and Ella don't need it, neither does his other major ally, Nell, and it doesn't tend to work on Redd.

Other: Currently in the circus as Danno the clown, and is doing extremely well at it - he seems to have a knack for making people laugh with him, not at him. He can also juggle very well, ride a unicyle and stiltwalk, and has an extremely good sense of humour for a boy his age. However, it's often hard to work out when he's being serious, because he's almost never serious.

At time of writing the twins are twenty, and are away from the Cirque in the care of Jon Reed, to see the world. Currently they are working as general servants at Mandala Mists hot springs resort. Ella is wearing her hair in a braid, the same as Gina's, and doesn't seem to mind being referred to as Gina most of the time by everyone except Jon. There is no picture of Kier, but in the two years since this was written, he has gained nine inches in height and six inches of hair, come on heat rather suddenly and gained not only his Babylon tattoo, but a rather aggressively obvious razor-wire wings tramp stamp and a number of rather alarming piercings too, and also started wearing lipstick and startling amounts of black leather and spikes in strange places. He has developed a taste for dominant men and has said that he wants to become a stripper. For a teenager of any other race than Catkine this might be alarming but Kier's father has been hoping he will grow out of it and his mother has been rather resigned, in the way good fortune tellers often are. Zan thinks the whole thing is hilarious.
